From Ego to Heart Consciousness

The transformation of the Ego will lead to the end of dualism

whereby the basis of the Ego vanishes.

You become Ego-less,

but more self-conscious than ever

Over time, the Ego will disappear and both the inner and outer dualism, as well as your subconscious, will disappear. Instead, the Heart Life experience, the unity-oriented Life experience, will take over as your dominant Life experience.

Currently, you are faced with two ways of experiencing life, each with its own unique way of responding to the challenges that come your way. You must choose between these two Life experiences, which can be difficult. The Ego Life experience is based on a dualistic view of life, while the Heart Life experience represents a unity-oriented view of life. These two experiences are fundamentally different, and each has an inner and outer expression.

Dualism exists as both an inner and outer dualism, while unity exists as both an inner and outer unity. When the Heart takes over, both the inner and outer dualism cease to exist. The two ‘poles’ merge, and you become one with the world and with your subconscious. The subconscious as we know it ceases to exist and is replaced by what I call ‘the Heart chamber’.

1. The inner and outer dualism

Introduction

We have seen that the Ego has a dualistic foundation, especially in the first half of the Ego development period, where the conscious Heart energies have not yet manifested themselves. During this phase of your development, your focus is to discover that which is you, and that which is not you. This is dualism. You are separated from the world and learn to recognize yourself through this separation. This still applies to most people, and it can be difficult to imagine that it will end one day.

In the Ego period, you are therefore separated from the world but at the same time identifying with it and letting yourself be defined by it. Your self-esteem is dependent on the outside world’s view of you, and instead of identifying with your innermost essence, you identify with your social status, your role as a father, your money, your car, your hobbies, your sports, your body, etc. All these things are not experienced as separate from you; they are an integral part of your Ego identity. This is normal, and during this process, you get to know yourself and build your identity.

You use the outside world to build the Ego-Identity. The Ego identity is not a false identity, although many claim it to be so. It’s just one of many identities. There is a point in your development when it is necessary, and another point when it is not. It remains only for as long as it is needed.

The Ego identity is like an outer shell that keeps you upright and enables to take part in this world. Someday, you will grow out of this shell and emerge as a new being.

This awakening is happening right now, and you are beginning to see the Ego identity as an empty shell. However, don’t judge it negatively, and remember that it’s responsible for bringing you to where you are today, and remember also that you’re not finished with it yet!

You have initiated a new journey where a faithful helper, the Ego identity, will eventually need to be replaced with a new helper.

The inner and outer dualism

The new identity, the Heart identity, will replace dualism with unity, but without compromising your individuality. This applies to both the external and internal dualism.

The dualism was born in the beginning of the Ego period. It started with a reaction to a conflict with the Ego-Life force. This led to a repression of this conflict, initiating the formation of the structure known as the subconscious – a structure that consequently contains, in its essence, this fundamental conflict.

It is a conflict between 1) the new desire for a realization of your own individuality via a dualistic life view, and 2) an inability to separate yourself from the outside world and bring about this realization (because you are still dominated by the Pre-Ego lifeview at that time).

You long for the ‘Ego-light’, but your eyes remain closed.

Note that with conflict, I mean a lacking ability to let the new Ego energies flow into your life. Conflict is always a lack of flow of a Life force, in this case the Ego Life force. Conflict is not a bad thing and is, in fact, a means for development.

The fact that you react with repression at the beginning of the Ego period is a unique way of dealing with conflict (and something you have not tried before at this point), and it is this that lays the foundation for what we might call an inner dualism (i.e., an inner separation from a repressed part of yourself).

Without inner dualism, there can be no outer dualism.

Your identity is thus in a double-dualistic relationship with both your subconscious and your surroundings.

The outside world and the subconscious are tightly connected. Everything you repress ends up in the outside world due to the law of projection.

When Life themes are turned on and off

Right now, you are motivated to seek the dualistic life view by specific (Ego-) Life forces. Later in your development you will be motivated to seek a ‘unity with the world’ by the ‘Unity’ Life forces.

Thus, Life forces and Life themes can be activated and deactivated.

When you achieve inner unity with your subconscious, this will initiate a deactivation of the Ego-individuality forces and instead turn on the forces of unity.

These forces bid you to integrate your inner unity (and now balanced individuality) into the world/community.

This, of course, happens under the strong influence of superconscious energies (heart energies and higher energies).

The Ego period started with a conflict with the Life theme for individuality. This led to the creation of the subconscious and thus to the inner dualism, which in turn made possible the outer dualism. The new view on the world, that showed you that you were not being identical to it, also made it possible for you to project your newly generated subconscious into it.

The inner and the outer dualism

The inner dualism enables the outer dualism, and the inner unity enables the outer unity. This means that the way you relate to the world reflects your relationship with yourself, and in particular your subconsciousness.

An internal conflict leads to an external conflict with the world. If you hate yourself, then you hate the world. If your psyche is dualistically constructed with a consciousness and a subconscious, then your relationship with the world is also dualistic. On the other hand, if you are one with yourself, then you are one with the world, and if you love yourself, then you love the world.

Your inner self is connected to the world, and you cannot experience unity with the world unless you experience it with yourself. The reason is that unity with the world requires that you see it for what it is, and this is not possible if you use the outside world as a place where to you transfer, and hence now primarily see, your subconscious.

You may believe that you see the world (and your fellow human beings), but you don’t – at least not to the degree that you think.

Much more than you realize, it’s your own projections that you see.

This is hard to understand for an Ego consciousness that is absolutely convinced that it sees the world quite clearly.

So, you see a great deal less of the world than you think. An example of ‘not seeing it’ might be exemplified by the contact with another human being. You see this person, but as soon as he/she opens their mouth, you encounter your own reactions and feelings, which can then take over and lead to a situation where you are more in touch with yourself than with the person. It can be particularly pronounced with your partner, as she/he can really push buttons that activate emotions in you. It may sound quite paradoxical that for many people it is their partner that they sometimes see the least.

Just as in the Ego period, where you bring your inner dualism into the world, you bring your inner unity into the world in the Heart period. In this way, you use the world, both in the Ego period and the Heart period.

Experiencing unity with the world occurs through integrating your inner unity with the world. This integration allows you to experience the world and yourself, and to abandon the old way of interacting with the world through subconscious projections. It even puts an end to the subconscious, enabling a completely different Life experience, which I will discuss below.

During the Ego period, dualism arises because it is necessary to create your Ego identity. Unity arises when you reach a point in your development where further progress requires this.

2. The dualistic Life experience (the Ego Life experience – the nature of a feeling)

Now that you have learned about inner and outer dualism, let’s delve deeper into the Ego Life experience (Figure 20). An Ego Life experience consists of 7 layers of consciousness. The personal subconscious is one of the layers of the Ego Life experience, where e.g. your complexes and traumas reside. All layers are called ‘layers of consciousness’ as they reflect different expressions of consciousness.

I stated earlier that when people experience emotions, there is more to it than what they immediately feel. We may feel sad, but by exploring this feeling, we encounter our subconscious, repressions, traumas, etc. These things reveal  that there was an extra ‘layer’ to the feeling, the layer of the ‘personal subconscious’. This layer has long been accepted, and we are all convinced that to understand our emotions, we must go deeper than the immediate experience of the emotion itself. We need to discover what is behind it and what has created it.

However, it doesn’t stop with the subconscious. There are even deeper layers.

Emotions/feelings are the ‘language of the Ego’. A feeling helps the individual to understand the world and himself via the Ego Life experience. The goal is to achieve full Ego consciousness. When this occurs, the energy from the deeper layers passes right through layer 5, without taking on an additional ‘clothing’ there (Figure 20).

Emotions are one of the ways in which life can be experienced. When we are dominated by them and completely identified with the Ego, we tend to believe that they represent the only way of experiencing life. This is a very limited view on life – but one that the Ego identity firmly holds on to.

Figure 20. The Ego Life experience. The 7 layers of the Ego Life experience. Each of the layers is represented by Life themes, emotions, sensory organs of the superconscious, all shown by various symbols, the colour of which shows the type of energy that activated them.

The journey of the Source to your consciousness

There is a Source behind your existence. This Source is part of everything you experience in life, including all your emotions. One can regard an emotion as something that occurs after the Source has been on a long journey through several layers of consciousness, with the goal of reaching you.

The original source has a language that you cannot understand, and it must therefore be translated into something that you can understand.

That’s what this journey is all about.

Layer Number 1 – The Source

The innermost core of an emotion is its origin, the ‘Source’ itself (Figure 20). It is the ‘unmentionable’ that is also the source of our existence. It wants to manifest itself through your consciousness, but your consciousness is nowhere near being able to understand or perceive this Source. The Source must embark on a long journey to transform itself into something that you can understand with your Ego consciousness.

Layer Number 2 – The collective superconsciousness – the forces behind our development

The next layer in an emotion comes from your collective superconscious, which is the superconsciousness of humanity. In this layer, we find that which has to do with all of humanity, not just yourself. This power is represented in every emotion. It stands for the totality of the potential of humankind (i.e., the entire ‘energy spectrum’). It stands for the development forces that create your own development structure which leads to your dualistic Life view. In it, we find the original energy behind the Life themes.

Layer Number 3 – The personal superconsciousness

The next layer comes from your personal superconscious. In your personal superconscious, you can receive ‘energies’ from the collective superconscious. Those you receive will activate certain Life themes and thus continue their journey to your subconsciousness and consciousness.

Layer number 4 – the Life theme layer

The next layer is a collective layer that contains Life themes. In psychology, it is referred to as the ‘collective subconscious’. I call this layer the ‘Life theme layer’. Its function is to determine the overall themes for all your emotions. This means that you cannot experience an emotion that is outside of these themes.

This layer determines what emotions are possible for you to experience. There are latent and active Life themes, and together they make up the whole spectrum of Life themes. These themes are linked to the energies found in the collective superconscious. The active Life themes represent the energies found in your personal superconscious (Figure 21).

Although this layer is like ‘a secret reality’ behind all your feelings, reactions, and beliefs, it is now possible to be in direct contact with a small part of it. It takes practice and extreme alertness, but discovering this layer within you and in your emotions is an incredible experience that can change your life!

It is like becoming an observer to the very foundation of your emotions.

Figure 21. The superconscious energies and the Life themes.  The energies of the collective and personal superconscious determine the full spectrum of Life themes, as well as which ones that are latent and which ones that are active.

Layer number 5 – the personal subconscious, one of the poles of the inner dualism

This layer is another personal layer, the personal subconscious. Here, we find your memories, repressions, hidden talents, complexes. All that reflects your personal life story.

This layer contains things that originate from your consciousness and your interaction with the world, and it constitutes one of the poles of your inner dualism.

Layer number 6 – consciousness, Ego identity, and part of the inner dualism

In this layer, we find your personal consciousness. This is where we find ‘the space of consciousness’, as well as ‘your current consciousness’. This is where we find your Ego identity.

Layer Number 7 – The collective consciousness

This is the last layer, and the third collective layer. It is the consciousness of humanity. You are part of humanity, and you contribute to the development of humanity, and humanity contribute to your development.

The consciousness of humanity constitutes the framework within which your own consciousness develops. You are constantly affected by it, from the lowest to the highest aspect of it.

You are affected by energies that are lower than your own current consciousness, or similar or higher than it. The latter, you cannot perceive, but these energies do initiate a desire within you to experience these higher aspects of life.

The collective consciousness therefore continuously challenges your highest abilities for awareness.

Layer 1+2+3+4+5+6+7 – a feeling/emotion is created

An emotion is an ‘energy’ that originates from ‘the Source’. This energy reaches your Ego consciousness and influences your conscious attitude to achieve balance between your consciousness and your superconscious, and an increased flow of superconscious energies through you.

An increased flow of these energies gives them the best opportunities to create an experience in you of the ‘highest’ kind. This is the purpose of your life, and it has always been that way!

When you experience an emotion, you experience all the layers at once! All the layers combined define an emotion. However, your experience of an emotion is dominated by the two outermost personal layers, the personal consciousness (layer 6) and the personal subconsciousness (layer 5). These two layers are known from analytical psychology, which is particularly focused on your Ego and your complexes. As you have already seen, these two layers make up the two poles of the inner duality, the duality that is so important for your identity, Life experience, and for the development of your Ego-consciousness.

2. The unity-oriented Life Experience – the Heart Life Experience

Let me now focus on what happens when the next Life experience becomes part of your life.

To 'wake up to a new world' is to experience a more original form of the energy that originated from the source.

The Ego experiences life through a specific structure. However, if you achieve Heart awareness, you will experience life through a different type of structure. You’ll learn more about this in the next chapter.

The Heart Life experience represents a completely different experience. When you manage to experience life in this way, you realize that the Ego Life experience constitutes a certain way of experiencing life, a way that is no longer adequate for you.

The Ego’s way of experiencing life is a ‘lower’ experience compared to the Heart experience, but it is not a wrong experience. Similarly, a consciousness based on even higher energies than the Heart energies is not a more correct way of experiencing life than the Heart’s way. It’s just another experiencing life in a more ‘original’ way.

A Heart experience consists of six layers

An emotion (i.e., an Ego Life experience) consists of seven layers, while a Heart experience consists of six layers. Not only is there a layer less in the Heart’s Life experience, but some of the layers are also qualitatively different from those in an Ego Life experience (Figure 22).

Layer number 1 – The Source

The innermost core of a Heart experience is, as for all Life experiences, the ‘unmentionable’, the ‘Source’ of your entire existence, and of all your Life experiences.

Layer number 2 – The collective superconscious

The next layer in a Heart Life experience comes from your collective superconscious, just as it does for an emotion.

Layer number 3 - The personal superconscious

The next layer is your personal superconscious. Here, there is a difference between Ego and Heart Life experiences. The layer represents the energy that you manage to receive from the collective superconscious. For the Heart, this is what I call “D-1” and “D-2” energies (and higher Heart energies than those in the conscious layer), while in the Ego Life experience, the energies are Heart and “D-1” energies (and higher Ego energies than those in the conscious layer). Even though the D-energies are starting to appear in the superconsciousness, they are so far ahead compared to our current level of development that I will not discuss them in detail here.

Layer number 4 – Life themes

Compared to the Ego period (the Ego Life experience), there are important differences regarding which Life themes are active and what energy the Life themes are activated by. In the Heart Life Experience, the Life themes are activated by Heart energies, as well as higher energies (D-1/D-2), as opposed to the corresponding layer in an emotion, where they are activated by Ego/Heart/D-1 energies

Layer number 5 – consciousness and the Heart chamber

In an emotion, layer 5 is the personal subconscious, but in a Heart Life experience, the personal subconscious does not exist. Layer number 5 therefore corresponds to the layer that is number 6 in an emotion. This is the layer that contains your consciousness in the Heart Life experience. This is where we find your Heart identity.

Figure 22. Heart Life experience. The 6 layers of the Heart Life experience. Each of the layers is represented by Life themes, sensory organs of the superconscious, shown by various symbols whose colour shows the type of energy that activates them.

What was previously called the personal subconscious (in the Ego Life experience) is now what I call the ‘Heart chamber’. It can be seen as a layer that is ‘fused with’ the layer for Heart consciousness. The Heart chamber is a place where your memories and experiences can be stored, but it is not a layer in which you can repress things. The Heart chamber is thus an integral part of layer 5.

Keep in mind, however, that your subconscious will not instantly disappear when you gain Heart awareness. It is a smooth transition, and the last remnant of the Ego subconscious disappears only when you are halfway through the Heart period, which is in a long time.

Layer Number 6 – The Collective Consciousness

This layer is the collective consciousness of humanity. What is unique about people who have Heart awareness is that they can receive new and higher energies from layer 6, compared to people who are dominated by the Ego Life experience.

3. To experience via the Heart Life experience

When the personal subconscious begins to disappear.

One of the unique things about the Heart’s way of experiencing life is that the experience is without the layer that represents your personal Ego-subconscious. This ‘clothing’ is lacking in the Heart Life experience.

When an energy from the superconscious does not have to pass through your personal subconscious, you experience it in a ‘purer’ form. It’s an experience of life that is not affected by all your repressions, complexes, etc.

The Heart Life experience is an experience that manages to rise above your Ego. It allows you to see a world that goes beyond the world of the Ego and beyond everything that the Ego believes so firmly in.

It's incredible to realize that the Ego's perspective is just one of many ways to experience life.

When you experience life ‘with the Heart’, it means that all the pain you felt when you were identified with the Ego has disappeared. And I really do mean all your pain and all your problems.

Challenges may stay, but the Ego that tend to ‘transform’ challenges into problems and painful reactions is no longer the dominant part of your current consciousness.

Your pain comes predominantly from your subconscious,

and when this is no longer part of your Life experience,

then you are free of pain

and more present in the here-and-now

You become present

The lack of your personal subconscious will also affect your ability to be present in life. As it is now for many, the interaction between your current consciousness and your subconscious makes you present in your subconscious, at the expense of being present in life. The subconscious (the personal) is the place in you where the past and the expected-future exist, but where the here-and-now has no place.

Therefore, the more you are occupied in the subconscious, the less you are present in the here-and-now. But when your subconscious is no longer a part of your Life experience, then you are completely present in life, and being present is always an extremely life-fulfilling and painless experience.

One of the interesting things about being present is that it is always experienced as meaningful and as something that manifest an inner feeling of happiness.

There are many ways to achieve this presence in the here-and-now. There is ‘interest-mediated’ presence (enjoying a hobby), meditation, and contact with people or animals. All these ‘methods’ of becoming present have one thing in common: they reduce how occupied you are with your subconscious and instead increase your presence in the here-and-now.

Pain or being unhappy is impossible when you are present in the moment. It’s not easy to be present, but when you succeed, it’s almost a magical experience and often an experience you’ll never forget.

This presence is one of the things that naturally follows the Heart Life experience.

When you are present, it is not possible to feel the pain that the Ego experiences. When you are present then you accept everything in life. In fact, one is above the concept of acceptance/non-acceptance, or fair/unfair.

The Ego’s pain experience is always associated with a lack of acceptance. In particular, the pain is unfair. This lack of acceptance is an essential component of Ego-pain. Furthermore, the Ego’s pain experience is closely related to the subconscious and will thus remove you from the present moment.

This lack of acceptance is part of the Ego, and that’s exactly how it should be.

In the Heart Life experience, you are present in the moment, the here-and-now. When one is present, then everything that exists is entitled to exist simply because it exists. This is a kind of logic that does not exist in the Ego’s world. It is a logic that the Ego neither understands nor accepts.

The Heart Life experience is above the concept of acceptance and non-acceptance. Acceptance/non-acceptance is something you experience as long as you are influenced by the Ego Life experience. The Heart accepts reality no matter what it offers you. That is something the Ego cannot do. The whole basis of the Ego is to be suspended between pain and pleasure, affirmation and the opposite.

Getting a peek into the ‘Heart-world’ is an experience like no other. It’s amazing not to spend energy dealing with whether something is fair or unfair, acceptable or unacceptable. It’s amazing not to feel like a victim of life’s injustice.

With the Heart attitude, all your problems disappear like dew to the sun! It is simply not possible to have problems with this attitude. Quite literally, problems cannot exist when you experience life in this way. Challenges remain, but problems disappear.

It can be difficult for us to imagine what drives and motivates us when we are dominated by the Heart Life experience and its way of ‘seeing’ life.

That is because we’re so used to being motivated and controlled by the Ego’s view on life and by its way of perceiving life. We are so used to being controlled by an inner loneliness, by our need for affirmation, by a dissatisfaction with life, that it can be difficult to imagine what should motivate you if you accept life as it is.

However, keep in mind that your imagination has its limitations, especially when it comes from the Ego. It is impossible for the Ego to imagine something that is exceeds the Ego’s own ability to experience life, and it is impossible for the Ego to imagine a driving force other than the one that drives the Ego itself.

The thing that motivates the Ego is the prospect of becoming pain-free and to trust that the boundary to the subconscious holds. That is what the Ego is about, and of course, it is impossible for you (to the extent that you are dominated by the Ego Life experience), to imagine a life where the subconscious is no longer a danger and is in fact no longer there.

With the Heart’s view on life, you are closer to your superconscious and to the will that exists there. This is a will that is so much more powerful than the will of the Ego. It is a will that motivates you to pursue new goals that are fundamentally different from those pursued by the Ego. It is a will that is closer to the source, to the origin of your existence. People who possess the Heart Life experience are people who appear to have a strong ability to live/realize their inner will and life goals, as well as an ability to stand by themselves.

You experience an inner love for yourself

Consider the energy you've spent feeling inadequate. The Ego suffers from low self-esteem and acts to compensate for it. Imagine if this wasn't the case. That's Heart awareness.

When you are dominated by your Ego, it is impossible to fully imagine what it is like to lose this burden. Some burdens are only really understood when they disappear. But through the Heart Life experience, you will experience the love you have for yourself, and you will understand that this love is a powerful force that cannot be negatively affected in any way by how you live your life or by what others think of you. Unlike the Ego’s self-esteem, which is constantly in danger, this Heart-love is a living part of your inner self, which is not in any danger.

This is an incredible experience, an experience that the Ego will never be able to understand, and it gives you amazing freedom in everything you do in your life because you now know that no matter what you do, your self-esteem is never at stake!

When you experience life through the Heart Life experience, you become receptive to new Life themes that concern not only yourself but also your role as an individual in a larger perspective. In the Heart Life Experience, the Life theme-activating-energies are Heart/D-1 energies, or even higher energies. This means that you are not only free of the personal subconscious (with all that this entails) but also experience an overwhelming motivation to explore this amazing life even more.

You look ‘beyond yourself’ and experience a deep desire to explore this part of life which is ‘beyond you’.

Summing up on the Heart Life Experience

A Heart Life Experience brings about several profound changes compared to the Ego Life experience. In the Heart Life experience, the ‘personal Ego-subconscious’ is not present, and you come into direct contact with new energies or dimensions of life (and yourself). In the Ego period, you have contact with the ‘psychic Life field’, and in the Heart period, you learn to assess the ‘Heart Life field’ – a Life field that is filled with Heart Life experiences from individuals who can accommodate this Life experience. The result is a sense of connection with all living beings.

In addition, through the Heart Life experience, you learn to be present in the here-and-now.

The Heart’s view on life also leads to the end of all your pain, and to a realization of the love that is within you and around you. It will be a love for yourself that will cause your self-esteem to be unwavering, and it will be a love towards life in general that leads to a deep and unbreakable faith in it.

As we have seen, the first half of the Heart development period occurs in parallel with the Ego development period, and your experience of life is most often a mixture of the Heart’s and Ego’s view on life. Full Heart consciousness can therefore only occur in the middle of the Heart development period, where the Ego period ends. It is possible to have a brief full experience of the Heart, but it will never be a permanent experience, as this requires that we have forever said goodbye to the dominance of the Ego.

Achieving Heart consciousness is a process that runs in parallel with a growing realization of the Ego, and it happens in precisely this way because the two events are mutually dependent on each other.

The full realization of the Ego requires the Heart, and the realization of the Heart requires a strong and harmonious Ego. The full realization of the Ego involves achieving a strong individuality and a sufficient balance in layer 5 (in the Ego Life experience). The realization of the Heart is to be able to experience life without the Ego-subconscious stealing your attention.

For most people, the Ego is still the dominant part of their Life experience. But the Heart is waking up. The superconscious Heart energies are at their highest, and the conscious Heart energies are beginning to develop in our consciousness. More and more will we experience these ‘Heart-lightnings’ from the superconscious, and in this way, get a taste of what awaits us.

Our current stage of development can be compared to the stage corresponding to when we only had a faint hint of the Ego Life experience (i.e., the time when the Pre-Ego Life experience was dominant). Think about how much has happened since and what tremendous development we have been through. The same, and more, await us now that we have entered the Heart development period.

Slowly we will progress towards this state, and more and more we will become acquainted with the Heart Life experience, and our personal subconscious and inner dualism will be reduced and replaced by a unity-based life view. The transformation of our consciousness is already underway, and we are living in an exciting time where the Ego and the Heart exist side by side inside us. When we have a conflict in our Heart-identity, it requires new methods to resolve it. We have seen that conflicts in the Ego-identity can be remedied via psychotherapy. However, this method is ineffective against a conflict with the Heart identity. Heart problems require a different form of therapy, which you can read more about in appendix 4.

We live in a time where one life view is waning, and another is taking over. The Life experience, which has been central to our development and has created the Ego-consciousness and the social structures that we know, is declining.
