Ego and Heart Therapy

All the Ego states
are associated with a unique combination of energies,
which determines what type of therapy,
is required for you to progress
to the next state.
The energies associated with the various Ego states act like a pair of glasses through which you perceive and experience life. They dictate the type of therapy that suits you best, be it self-therapy, one-on-one therapy, group therapy, or any other form of therapy.
Here I will focus on the importance of aligning any therapy with the state that dominate you the most.
Different Ego states present different conditions and expose you to different energies. Any therapeutic approach must take this into account.
Awareness of this is crucial, as many instances where therapy fails are due to the therapy targeting a state that the client is not in. Consequently, the therapy will be neither relevant nor efficient.
For instance, the goal of a therapy targeting the “compensation” state is to strengthen the Ego and establish a conscious contact with the Heart. However, the other states have other therapeutic goals.
Therapy in the 4 different states must be tailored to the state
The purpose of therapy is always
to help you achieve a greater balance
with the Ego Life forces and the active Life themes
As mentioned above, the expression of the Ego can be divided into 3 main states, "compensation", "Anti-compensation" and "vacuum". To any of the 3 states is associated a special combination of energies (Figure 1) that determines how one experiences life in the state. These energies are both conscious and superconscious.
Regarding therapy, it is important to mention ‘the primary goal' of the states. The primary goal describes the type of energy that one must be able to accommodate in the consciousness, in order to progress from that state.
Figure 1. Therapy and Ego states.
In the state of "Vacuum", the dominant energy is a pre-Ego energy, and the therapy targeting this state should not presuppose a well-functioning Ego. In the 'Anti-compensation' state, you experience a conscious Ego energy, which the therapy must relate to, and in the "Compensation" state there is also a conscious Heart energy, that the therapy must take into account.
The objective of any therapy is to assist you in achieving your ‘primary goal’. When this is accomplished, you will find that your life ‘makes sense’ because it aligns with this goal.
The primary goal varies across different states. If a therapy fails, it’s most often not due to any fault of the client, but because the therapy did not align with the primary goal.
The primary goals are illustrated in Figure 1.
Therapy during the Ego period differs fundamentally from therapy during the Heart period. This is because Heart-related issues do not have a psychological origin.
During the Heart period, your pain is born out of a lack of unity. Therefore, if you again feel that you are a contributing member of a community, then this can lead to a complete recovery from your (heart) suffering. This concept may be difficult for the Ego to comprehend.
Let’s take a look at the therapeutic requirements for the different states.
Therapy aimed at the vacuum state
This therapy is focused on re-establishing the Ego.
Your primary goal: Awareness of conscious (but low) Ego energies.
The characteristics of this condition are:
-
You have no sense of who you are and what you want (i.e., you possess a dissolved Ego).
-
You experience a reaction to EL (the existential loneliness) that spans from deep meaninglessness and hopelessness to complete indifference and emotional numbness.
-
You experience a lack of will, and an indifference, to becoming pain-free.
In the Vacuum state, the lowest of the three ‘Ego states’, you have little to no sense of yourself and no understanding of what you want. This is because your Ego is partially or completely dissolved, leading to feelings of deep meaninglessness, hopelessness, but also a reluctance to be free from pain.
In this state, the highest energy you can perceive is a low Ego energy, together with a dominant Pre-Ego energy (as shown in Figure 1). Pre-Ego energy represents a primitive experience of individuality. Therefore, the goal for the Vacuum state is to re-establish a sense of yourself as an individual.
Therapy aimed at the Vacuum state must consider that the ‘language’ understood by a person in this state is built up of Pre-Ego energies and low Ego energies. A therapy that focuses on the Heart, or on making Ego structures conscious (such as repressed complexes), will not succeed. Individuals experiencing a dissolved Ego need to restore their sense of individuality or Ego before beginning any actual analytical therapy.
Traditional psychotherapy is not required in this state. Instead, there is a need to feel more centred and to express creativity without words. There is no need for thoughts, but there is a need for interaction with people, animals (especially useful in this state), nature, etc.
It is important to experience life in a safe and affirming way. Only when you achieve a certain sense of who you are, are you ready to receive the energies that the next state represents.
What should be central to therapy aimed at the Vacuum state is:
-
The therapy should restore your Ego.
-
It should start with building a boundary to your subconscious and EL.
-
It should focus on uncomplicated experiences of life, through a solid grounding, and include body exercises as well as creativity.
-
It must prioritize interaction with other people.
-
It may prioritize interaction with animals, nature, or music.
-
It should focus on establishing a connection with life around you, rather than on an inner connection with the inner 'demons' or with EL.
-
It must be very prepared to the fact, that at the same rate as the Ego is rebuild, so is your ability to feel pain! This will most often be the first emotion that you encounter when the therapy is working.
What should be avoided in a therapy aimed at the vacuum state is:
-
An intellectual therapy should be avoided. Instead, you need to focus on grounding and connecting to life.
-
Do not focus on Heart energy and other spiritual practices such as meditation, as you're not ready for this yet.
-
You should not be exposed to contact with your complexes and repressions.
Therapy aimed at the 'anti-compensation' state
Therapy is focused on centring yourself, and on rebuilding and strengthening the Ego.
Your primary goal: Conscious living out medium Ego energies.
Characteristics of this state are the following:
-
You have a partial sense of who you are and what you want (i.e., a partially intact Ego). The Ego is not completely dissolved in this state.
-
You are affected by a 'negative' will emerging from the complexes, and you blame life for your pain. You've taken on the role of a victim.
-
Your method to become pain-free will involve the "anti-compensation method" – i.e., the "will to non-life," and there is a great deal of pain associated with this condition.
In contrast to the Vacuum state, where one is entirely or partially ‘numb’, the ‘anti-compensation’ state allows you to feel. However, much of what you feel is painful, and your faith in life is minimal. As a result, instead of embracing life to progress, you do the opposite! You reject life and most of the opportunities it presents.
The dominant conscious energy in this state is a low Ego energy, signifying a ‘low’ level of individuality. This is the highest conscious energy that one can attain in this state, and it is also the highest energy that a therapy must target!
The Ego energy is your immediate goal, which must be achieved before you can progress to higher states. Unless you’re at a high level in this state, you cannot handle having your Ego challenged or explored, making traditional confrontational analytic psychotherapy unsuitable!
Instead, the focus should be on rebuilding the Ego. Additionally, as shown in Figure 1, you also lack the ability to absorb the Heart energy, which is why it should not be the dominant element in a therapy aimed at this state.
Thus, the proper therapy in this state is a therapy that focus mostly on the centring of the Ego. The therapy should support you in keeping yourself upright, rather than teaching you to run. In the upper levels of the state, however, the therapy may cautiously pursue an "Ego-psychology/therapy", reminiscent of traditional analytical psychology.
In this state it’s about reclaiming your Ego and strengthening your sense of self. It’s about finding the courage to face life head-on and use it as a means to alleviate your pain, rather than blaming life for your troubles. While spiritual practices such as meditation can be beneficial, it’s important to avoid overindulging in them. Additionally, traditional analytical psychology may not be suitable for everyone, as it can bring up repressed emotions and traumas that may be difficult to handle in your current state.
What should be central to therapy in the anti-compensation state is:
-
The therapy should inspire you to use the compensation method.
-
It should centre/restore your Ego.
-
It should strengthen your centred Ego.
-
It must build a strong boundary to your subconscious and EL.
-
It can't assume that you have a strong sense of self.
What should not be central to therapy in the anti-compensation state is:
-
You should not be confronted directly with painful complexes in the first half of this state.
-
You need to focus on grounding yourself and not get too intellectual in your therapy.
-
Don't focus too much on Heart energy and other spiritual practices (except in the upper layers).
-
You should not be exposed to traditional analytical psychology.
Therapy aimed at the 'Compensation' state
Therapy that focusses on both the Ego and the Heart.
Your primary goal: Conscious living out Heart energies and high Ego energies.
The characteristics of this state are:
-
You experience a more or less intact sense of who you are and what you want (i.e., a more or less intact Ego – since the Ego in this state is not in danger of breaking apart).
-
You still experience a negative will, especially from the complexes, but it is only moderate in the upper layers.
-
The method of becoming painless is predominantly via the "compensation method".
In the upper Ego Compensation state, you seek to affirm your person to compensate for the loneliness that the Ego always experiences. However, the Ego is so centered and strong in this state that the danger from the subconscious is minimal. The energies that one masters consciously are the Ego energies up to and including the intermediate stage, as well as low Heart energies, and both energies are the primary goal of this state.
Therefore, a therapy should focus on confronting you with the inner painful psychic ‘structures’ in your subconscious. This confrontation will strengthen your Ego and lead to an ability to experience conscious Heart energies. Your therapy should support this, for example, through meditation, exercises in being present, or a spiritual practice.
The goal of the therapy is to create a strong and harmonious Ego. Unlike therapy aimed at the other two states, therapy in the upper Ego Compensation state must use Heart energy actively and consciously.
What should be central to a therapy aimed at the Compensation state is:
-
The therapy should support you in using the compensation method.
-
It must try to create a strong and harmonious Ego.
-
It must confront you directly with the inner pain-inducing structures, such as the complexes – so that you can receive their 'gifts'.
-
It must create maximum balance between your superconscious energies and your conscious attitude, by focusing on high Ego energies, as well as Heart energies.
-
It must for the first time take Heart energies into the consciousness.
-
It should lead you to a state where the conscious Heart energies will begin to have a major impact on your life.
What therapy should not do when you're in the state of 'Compensation' is:
-
To focus only on the Heart.
-
To focus only on the Ego, especially in the upper layers of the state.
-
To fail acknowledging the Ego's need for affirmation.
-
It should not believe that all complexes and traumas must be made conscious. They shouldn't.
-
It should not forget that there are often no shortcuts to learning – even though many believe it.
-
It should not intellectualize the process and forget the wordless life-affirming experience.
The 4th state and the new therapy – "Heart therapy"
Most people today find themselves in the third development period, the Ego period. Here, the focus is on developing your individuality and your Ego. However, some people have entered the Heart development period, where you focus on developing your individuality further by being an active contributing part of a community.
It can be a challenge to understand that it is possible to develop in this way (for the Ego), because we are so used to think that development can only happen by delving into the darkness of the subconscious and confronting repressed sides of ourselves.
Therapy in the Ego period is fundamentally different from therapy in the Heart period, since only in the former case is there a psychic cause behind the problems. It’s interesting to note that a complete cure for your so-called ‘Heart pain’ can be accomplished by you becoming a contributing part of a community, instead of finding a psychic cause to your pain. This is surprising to many people.
Humanity is entering the Heart period, which means that our state of consciousness will gradually become dominated by the Heart energy. This places additional demands on therapeutic methods, as they must increasingly be able to handle what I call Heart-pain.
Heart pain is to the Heart what complexes/repressions are to the Ego. Where complexes are basically born out of a desire to find one's individuality and deal with one's inner Ego loneliness, the Heart-pain is born out of a desire to be an active contributing part of humanity, and the need to develop one's individuality/self-awareness further by integrating it into the world.
The Ego period is a period of separation (dualism), where the Heart period is a period of unity (integration), and the development structure is quite different in the two periods. Therefore, Ego and Heart therapy should also be different.
Heart-pain occurs when you fail to live out your initial Heart awareness. Heart pain is already a part of many people's lives. It can look like, and be experienced as, a kind of depression. However, it is simply a reaction to the fact that your way of life conflicts with your new ‘Heart-need’, which invites you to develop further via unity with the world (rather than via separation).
What do you need?
We are all present in the four mentioned states, but the more we develop, the more we experience life through the upper states. Moreover, since humanity is entering a new development period, we are under intensified pressure, a pressure that aims to help us experience life consciously through the energy of the new age: the Heart energy.
As part of this global and personal cleansing of the low Ego energies, it is important that you give yourself the support and therapy that you are predisposed to receive, which is determined by your dominant state of consciousness.
Maybe you need more — or less — focus on exploring the Ego. Or you may need to focus more on the Heart therapy if, like many people, you've started to possess Heart awareness.
